Epidural Steroid Injections

If you’re suffering from pain in the neck, arm, lower back, or leg, epidural steroid injections (ESI) may provide just the relief you need. With this procedure, the discomfort of inflamed and irritated spinal nerves due to spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, sciatica, a degenerative or herniated disc can be effectively alleviated.

How it works

Epidural spinal injections combine the anti-inflammatory actions of a corticosteroid and the numbing effects of an anesthetic to reduce your discomfort and support improved function. By injecting the medications into the precise area between the bony vertebra and the protective sac surrounding the spinal cord and exiting nerves, this minimally invasive procedure offers relief from pain while reducing inflammation of the targeted nerve and surrounding area.

Relieving pain and restoring function

The type of epidural steroid injections depends on whether your pain emanates from problems in your neck or farther down the spine in your lower back. In some cases, based on the extent of your pain, epidural steroid injections may be repeated on your left and right sides as well as in more than one location along your spine. You may also receive additional injections over a prescribed period of time to achieve more significant relief.

Once your discomfort is alleviated, physical therapy and exercise may be recommended to rebuild your strength, flexibility, and range of motion in support of optimal function.

A minimally invasive in-office procedure

An epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive procedure assisted by x-ray fluoroscopy that is typically performed on an outpatient basis. While in most cases, patients are able to walk around afterward, everyone responds differently, and it’s a good idea to have someone drive you home following the procedure.
