Vestibular & Balance Rehabilitation

Did you know that vestibular disorders affect 35% of adults over the age of 40 years and close to 3.3 million children? At the office of Southern Medical Suites, our physical therapist offers skilled care to relieve the feelings of dizziness, vertigo, lack of balance, vision difficulties, nausea, and other symptoms associated with a vestibular disorder.

Understanding vestibular disorders and care

Vestibular and balance rehabilitation involves exercise-based physical therapy to retrain the brain and central nervous system to compensate for inner ear damage and deficits. It’s designed to help the brain cope with the confusing and disorientating signals coming from the inner ear. The premise is that the brain can be rewired to adapt and recognize more reliable input from the eyes, ankles, legs, and neck.

How we can help

Our focus is on improving the daily function and quality of life for patients with vestibular disorders. As experienced providers of care, we tailor every treatment plan to address the unique symptoms and needs of each patient. We carefully assess patients to determine which movements trigger dizziness, vertigo, or other symptoms. We also evaluate visual focus and eye tracking as well as balance, posture, gait, flexibility, range of motion, muscle strength, and coordination, and other areas to determine the extent of symptoms.

Vestibular & balance rehabilitation treatment involves a progression of customized exercises designed to alleviate the symptoms and limitations associated with a loss of vestibular function.

Vestibular & balance rehabilitation may include the following modes of care:

  • Canalithic repositioning procedure for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
  • Vestibular habituation/Adaptation Exercises
  • Gaze stabilization exercises
  • Balance retraining exercises
  • Ambulation training (assisted or unassisted walking)
  • Fall prevention techniques
  • Strength, flexibility, and conditioning programs
  • Patient education to support a healthy lifestyle and activities choices
